What to consider when creating a home office

Date

Undertaking an extension or home improvement project will give you the best opportunity to carve out exactly what you want from a home office.  You need to make sure you get it right for your work and family needs so some careful planning is required.

Start by thinking about the purpose of your home office and the activities you do for your work.

  • Will you be converting an existing space such as an attic, basement, or garage?  These can be useful options to create more useable space but need careful consideration of things like natural lighting, power, and storage, often in awkward-sized spaces.
  • Being able to close the door on your office space can help keep you stay free from distractions and help you switch off from work.
  • If you have the outdoor space you might decide on a garden outbuilding, which you can build under permitted development (no planning permission required).  These can be a great option for a detached and dedicated working space but always check with a professional before going ahead.  The rules can differ by area.
  • How much space do you need?  As well as desk space you should also consider space for files and books etc.
  • Consider whether you need to be free from distractions, for example when the kids get home from school, which will determine whether you need additional soundproofing.
  • Don’t forget about needing a fast WiFi connection for all those Zoom meetings we have all grown accustomed to.  Any new home office project should have tech needs at its heart.
  • It might depend on what job you do but creating a space that feels professional can help you into the working mindset. Clean lines, good-quality lighting, and smart ergonomic furniture will help set the tone and differentiate the space from the rest of your home.
  • Finally, don’t forget that you will be spending a lot of time in this space so design it with your wellbeing in mind.  If you can, make sure there is lots of natural light and even better a lovely view.
